New Kitties: Blanca and Lupita

Meet Blanca and Lupita, two of the kitties Lori is fostering right now.

This is Blanca:

She's a kitten, probably around 7 months old. She was found as a stray, and spent some time in a shelter before coming to us. She's a sweetheart and a purr-machine. Although she's had a rough start to life, she's learning to play and getting strong. Blanca will be ready for adoption in a few weeks.

This is Lupita:

Lupita is a three year old beautiful Russian blue with bright green eyes. Unfortunately she had been in a shelter since 2009, until we rescued her. She loves to play and be petted. Lupita will be ready for adoption as soon she is spayed.

Both of these kitties came from a high-kill shelter in Southern Illinois. They came to us with upper respiratory infections. But after some TLC from Lori, they're all better and completely healthy. They both love to snuggle and get along with both cats and dogs.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of our volunteers who truly make a difference in our animal's lives.

Volunteers who don't hesitate to roll up their sleeves and spend their evening bleaching cages up at Petsmart for hours. Volunteers who spend time visiting the cats and helping them pass the time in a small cage and refreshing their surroundings. Volunteers who help with the spay/neuter clinic. Volunteers who spend a weekend day at special adoption events, and so much more.

As you can see, it's just not one-dimensional, but so much more.

How rewarding it is to have you all as a part of Catsnap.

The many hats of Farley

Fostering a special-needs cat sometimes is a little hard on the heart. As a foster "mom" to Farley, I am witness to unconditional love constantly and it's hard to not fall in love a little more each day.

I hope that one day he will find his perfect home that will take him as he is.

The Ruthless Goats

We had a great turnout for the 'Goats for Cats' benefit at the Iron Post last Saturday. The Iron Post was very gracious to host an event for us and 'The Ruthless Goats' were amazing!

We raised quite a bit of money for our spay/neuter program and all the money goes directly to help Champaign's homeless animals.

In addition to the money that was raised at the door and donated by people attending the event, Neil Culpepper from Kane and Company (41 East University / (217) 359-2424) donated several gift certificates for us to give out for people who donate $25 or more. We have a few left, so if you would like one, we'll have them for the event we're having at Mike and Molly's on February 27. We're lucky to have such wonderful people support our work. And it's the beginning of the month, so CATsNAP cats are back in the Petsmart adoption center. They started to arrive this morning and we have several adult cats and a few kittens who are all ready for their forever homes!

Update on Red

Red had a full vetting on Monday and it looks like he is going to be ok. He has large wounds and scabs over most of his body, but the vet was able to shave and clean them out. He's about 15 lbs and he will make a great cat for someone.

This gorgeous orange male just found his way to us Saturday night (1/16). He has a serious injury on his head that will be evaluated on Monday. Unfortunately, his condition is far too common for cats who are abandoned. He was clearly someone's cat at some point, because he is super friendly. But, he's been outside during the freezing temps.

He wants everyone to know that he is a lover, not a fighter. He will be interviewing for a warm bed and some catnip shortly.

Phoebe and Lila

CATsNAP alums 'pretending' that they don't like each other. Phoebe (maine coon) was trapped outside in a bad part of town and is around 10 years old. She is missing a few teeth and has an old foot injury from her time outside. Lila was trapped at a trailer park outside of town and was very sick when we first got her. They are both very lucky to be inside and well cared for.

Bogey

No, this isn't a thinner Jonesie. This is golf cat, Bogey. A CATsNAP volunteer found him a few weeks ago after he had been abandoned at a local golf course. He's now warm, well-fed and neutered (hooray!).

I've been watching him for the last few days until his foster mom comes back from vacation. I love this cat!! I'm really hoping that someone will adopt him soon, 'cause I'm really liking me some Bogey. I've gotten quite attached to him. He loves to snuggle, loves other cats and dogs and is an all-around awesome cat.

Seriously, will someone please adopt this cat?

Resolutions for 2010

Jonesie wanted me to share his 2010 resolutions with everyone:

1. Lose those last stubborn 5 lbs

2. Find an awesome home

3. Nap more

So far, he's lost a 1/2 lb and continues to moniter his caloric intake. He had blood work last week to make sure his thyroid and blood sugar were at normal levels, and we're happy to report that he's as healthy as can be. He just needs a home. He gets along well with other cats and dogs, but not with very young children. He is front-declawed and has good litter box habits.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun celebration last night. We moved all the cats from the Petsmart adoption center and into foster homes. 2009 was a successful and productive year for us and I am hoping for an even busier 2010! If volunteering is on your list of resolutions, consider volunteering for us! We always need people to foster, clean cages at Petsmart and trap feral cats.

We have an adorable special needs cat, 'Wiggles' that is looking for a forever home. She has a condition known as Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH), also known as 'wobbly kitten syndrome.' It is not contagious and there is no cure (however, it does not get worse with age). It is generally caused from exposure to a viral infection (such as feline panleukopenia), poisoning or malnutrition during fetal development. She has a very mild form of the disease and she should lead a long, healthy life. She is very playful and gets along well with other cats.

Tomorrow is our last day at the Petsmart adoption center until February 1. We've had a *very* busy month and a lot of adoptions! I'm pretty sure all of the volunteers are ready for a break and the cats will enjoy going back into their foster homes where they'll have more room to run around. Cats can still be adopted from their foster homes during the months we are not at Petsmart.

As we've had quite a few adoptions this month, we've been able intake quite a few new cats that were in need of our help. Meet Mistletoe (dilute tortie) and Lionel (buff boy) who are about 16 weeks old. They are the nicest kittens and demand love and attention.

Also, thank you to all the volunteers who worked long hours during our 'Pictures with Santa' event last week. We received both monetary and food donations and helped get the word out about our program.

We'll be at Petsmart this Saturday from 11-4 for 'Pictures with Santa.' We'll also have a few volunteers at the front of the store accepting donations for the cats (food, litter, toys, etc).

Hope everyone braves the pre-Christmas traffic and comes out to help us raise some money for the cats!

Mischief

Poor Mischief...she found her way to us with a severely broken right rear leg. She won't tell us what happened either.

She went to the U of I Vet School and had the leg surgically repaired. She is only about 8 months old and should completely recover and the have full use of her leg. Her pins will be removed around Christmas and she'll be as good as new!

Kali is Home!

CATsNAP rescued itty bitty Kali several weeks ago and she is in her new home! Kali was found abandoned under a bush when she was only a few weeks old.

She has wonderful new parents, lots of toys and is adjusting well. She is the fluffiest, sweetest kitten and we're so happy that she has such a happy ending.

I don't know where the days are going - I swear, I blinked and November was gone! So here's a few of the highlights from November:

*Special-needs cats Lila and Gypsy have both been adopted by CATsNAP volunteers!

*We raised about $400 dollars at 2 Bergner's events for our food and litter program.

We're back in the Petsmart adoption center for the month of December. The new PVC beds are in all the cages, and they are amazing. One volunteer worked all month long and made all the fleece beds for us. They keep the cages cleaner, and give the cats a place to sleep and hide that's not their litter box. I can't even tell you how excited I am for these beds!

If you're looking to adopt a wonderful cat, please go to Petsmart and take a look at Chelsea. She's about 3 years old and is a sweet (yet shy) cat. She's now looking for her THIRD (and final!) home. Her last people simply decided that they were "no longer cat people" and she came back to us. She is a bit on the quiet side and will take some time to adjust once she does get into a home. She also seems to bond a bit more quickly to women than men. She would thrive in a quiet home where she can just be herself.

Welcome Jonesie

Meet large and in-charge Jonesie, a 5 to 6 year old neutered and front declawed male left homeless after his owner passed away. Yes, Jonesie is on a diet. He was 20.6lb and is down to 18.8lb. He is a nice cat and can move quickly (believe it or not) when he feels like it. He is looking for a loving home that will help get his weight down a little more. He likes other cats and does not seem at all bothered by dogs.

It's seems like we've been especially flooded with cats over the last few days! One of our feral cat trappers caught another 6 cats this morning and there appears to be 8 more cats in this particular colony that still need to be trapped and fixed. Let's hope she gets the rest before the cold really hits us!

One of our foster moms took in these 5 the other day. We've just pulled them out from a high-kill shelter and they will be ready for adoption within the next few weeks!

Even though the weather is getting cooler, we're still getting lots of kittens in. If this year will be anything like last year, we'll have them all winter long. We just got in a group of 5 fluffy kittens yesterday. I have one litter of four (5 weeks old) - two grey boys, 1 tabby boy and a long hair tortie. CATsNAP took in a tiny 4-week old grey tabby girl yesterday and we've decided to put her in with this group as she was very lonely.

I recruited some volunteer help to wash the kittens (I think she enjoyed the bathing process more than they did). These kittens were filthy, particularly the tabby girl. It took about an hour and a half to bathe all 5 kittens.

We have 2 names so far for the kittens (I'm taking suggestions!) The tabby boy is Arthur. His tortie sister, who you will meet tomorrow, is Belle.

This is the 4-week old girl. She was found outside and was covered in poop, mud and canned cat food. You can't even imagine how bad she smelled...

A lot of the kittens we take in are either feral and angry or completely terrified. This group is completely different. They are playful, social and all-around awesome. After they were dried and ate dinner, they romped around their foster room and didn't stop playing until bedtime.

Scarlet and Reggie went to their forever home this week! I'm so happy that they have been adopted together and went to a great home with a very loving mom.

Cute little Chester went to his forever home this week as well. We still have a great group of cats in the Petsmart adoption center until the end of the month.

We've also started building elevated pvc cat beds for the cats in the adoption center. We're hoping this will reduce some of the messiness of the cages while giving the cats more playroom and giving them a comfortable place to sleep. The goal is for all the cats to have one pvc bed in each cage by December 1. Our fantastic volunteers have already offered to build the beds, but I am looking for people willing to donate their time to help me sew the beds. It should be a fairly simple project. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. I think the cats will really enjoy the elevated beds.

Finally - please keep Gypsy in your thoughts. The tumor that was removed last week, did in fact turn out to be cancerous. The vet believed the cancer had not spread, but her foster mom found 2 more lumps this evening. Let's hope for the best and that these lumps are not cancerous as well. It's been an emotional roller coaster with this cat. Just when we think we're getting a bit ahead with her progress, something happens. She will be back at the vet on Monday for more testing. Until then, her foster mom continues to take amazing care of her. Gypsy has been better fed and more loved in the last 2 weeks then in the last 6 months, if not her entire life.

Better Every Day

Thank you so much to everyone who braved the cold and donated food to Gypsy last Saturday at the Farmer's Market. We received 110 cans of cat food and 14 lbs of dry food for her. We also took in several donations this week and at last count, we have over 160 cans! I think we'll be well over 200 cans of donated food by the end of the week! Thank you everyone! It's not too late to donate food, we'll always accept food/supply donations.

Here's the most recent pictures of our poor girl -

Gypsy is being very well cared for by one of our foster parents and is getting healthier everyday. She went to the vet yesterday and just weighs over 5 lbs (and this is after a week of 3 cans of cat food a day). The vet estimated her age at closer to 8 years and not the 1-2 years we originally thought. The head wound was not an infected bite wound, but rather a tumor, which was also removed yesterday (click on photo to see stitches). The vet doesn't think it's cancerous, but it has been sent to the lab for testing just to be on the safe side.

While she looks in pretty rough shape, her blood work was good she shouldn't have any long-term damage or illness and should make a full recovery.

Rest, food and lots of love should make her whole again and we are expecting her to have a wonderful, long life ahead of her.

More On Gypsy

Gypsy is settling in nicely to life indoors. She's been spending her days eating multiple cans of cat food, sleeping and bossing around the 17-lb cat she lives with. She loves purring and snuggling with her foster mom and will be a wonderful cat to the family that adopts her. If you click on the picture, you can see the wound on her head is starting to heal.

Interestingly, I've also been informed that poor Gypsy is 'sun bleached' and will return to an all-black coat in time. Poor girl, life must've been miserable for her outside.

We've decided to have a small 'Cat Food Drive' tomorrow from 8 am-12 noon at the Farmer's Market (rain or shine) to help fatten her up. If you have any food or items you would like to donate to Gypsy, we'd love to have it. Please pass the word around, and let's get Gypsy healthy!

This is little Gypsy. I was in Urbana this morning and saw this cute girl sitting next to my car as I was walking back to the parking lot. Stray cats will usually run away as soon as they see someone, but not Gypsy. As I opened my car door to see if I had a carrier (which I did not... this made for an interesting car ride) she jumped right in and made herself at home. She's been outside for at least several months. She's only about 7 lbs and is covered in fleas, mats and scabs.

She was in the right place at the right time. She's now warm and eating lots of canned food. She'll be moved into one of our foster homes for evaluation and then put up for adoption once she is spayed and gets the all-clear from the vet and her foster mom.

*Update* Gypsy just got a bath and some antibiotics for her head injury. Turns out, she is also declawed. Declawed cats should NEVER be allowed outside (or clawed cats). They just don't have the ability to defend themselves from attacks.

She seems to be missing part of her tail...

Also, we'll be at the Urbana Farmer's Market this Saturday for the last time this year. We'll have t-shirts for sale and will be happy to answer any of your adoption and spay/neuter questions. And of course, if you happen to have any spare canned/dry food that you like to donate for Gypsy's rehabilitation, we won't turn it away!!

CATsNAP volunteers spend last night bleaching and cleaning the Petsmart Adoption Center and the cats will start arriving today! We have a fantastic group this month including Chloe, a 1-yr old, front declawed girl whose former people decided it was easier to give her to CATsNAP than to take her with them when they moved. She deserves a stable, forever home where no one will leave her again. She is super friendly and loves cats and dogs.

We will be at the Urbana Farmer's Market on October 17 for the last time this season.

We've had Scarlet and Reggie for just over a week, and I'm happy to report that both of them are doing really well and will be adoptable in no time. Feral kittens tend to tame pretty quickly once they are in a home environment. In my experience, the best way to socialize kittens is to wrap them in a towel and give them as much attention as possible. The socializing process can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks. Scarlet was fully tame by day 3. She is a spitfire and spends most of her day chasing her foster sister Lila up the stairs.

Here's Scarlet on day 2. Isn't she the most beautiful kitten in the world?

We have a small cat bed/dome in their foster room that she just loves. However, if she's on top of it....

...you can pretty much bet that little Reggie is buried inside and she isn't about to let him out!

ROAR!!!

Reggie is getting a little braver about exploring the house and playing with the other cats (and inspecting the camera). He's still on the timid side, but I think he'll be just perfect in a few weeks. He'll have what remains of his mangled back leg removed once he gets a bit bigger, and can go to his forever home once he heals.

Both of them are available for adoption and Scarlet will be making an appearance at Petsmart in the month of October after she is spayed.

Scarlet and Reggie

Meet 5-week old Sir Reginald Dashingham (aka Reggie). Reggie was caught on 9/20/09 and was living at a recycling center with his sister Scarlet. Reggie is missing his back right paw. As CATsNAP has just taken him in, we don't know yet if he was born this way or suffered a trauma when he was a baby. He is also very thin, but his foster mom is working hard to fix that with numerous cans of Fancy Feast. Once he reaches a healthy weight, he will be neutered and will undergo surgery to remove what remains of his back leg to prevent further injury/infection.

Scarlet is a stunning dilute calico and is full of sugar and spice (and everything nice). She will be ready to go to her forever home by 10/1/09 after she has finished recovering from her spay surgery.

Petsmart Adopt-A-Thon

CATsNAP volunteers were out this weekend to with help with Petsmart's 'National Adoption Weekend' event. We had several cats to show and Josie the dog. We had a successful weekend and adopted out several cats and have an adoption pending on Josie.

We're still in kitten season! We have kittens of all ages in the program right now. If you're looking for a kitten, they are all listed on Petfinder and we will be back in the Petsmart adoption center in September.

Josie the Wonder Dog would much rather sit on her foster dad's lap than hang out with the cats. She is the best dog ever and just loves everyone she meets (especially squirrels).

CATsNAP rescued Gizmo, who was on the euthanasia list at a high-kill shelter. He found his forever home this weekend, along with his buddy Sophie. He has the most beautiful eyes and loving personality. Check out those whiskers!

It was a hot and sticky weekend! Even though we had the shade of a tent, the kittens were all getting hot and grumpy after a few hours. One of our fantastic volunteers put the kittens in her car one at a time, to enjoy some quiet snuggling and cool air conditioning.

Thank you to all the great volunteers who worked so hard this weekend and did such a great job finding homes for our cats!

On Saturday, August 22nd, CATSNAP attended the Bergner's Kids Fest. We brought only a sampling of the cute kitties that are available through our program. Miss Catsnap also made an appearance, boy does she get around! Here's a couple of pictures from our event.

UPDATE: DUSTY THE INJURED KITTEN

Some of you may remember Dusty, the injured Siamese kitten (if not, see previous posting). He fell from a high distance and ended up have a life-threatening hernia and a broken leg. After 2 surgeries, he healed really well. We are happy to report Dusty is newly neutered and was adopted into his forever home yesterday!! YAY!

National Homeless Animals Day

This Saturday was 'National Homeless Animals Day' and several rescue groups and members of the Central Illinois Animal Welfare Coalition were at the Market to raise awareness of the problem of pet overpopulation in Champaign County.

CATsNAP was there bright and early with Annie, our 3-year old beagle who is still looking for a home. We talked to several people about volunteering and there were several people who had questions about the adoption process.

Our table was right next to the Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance. The two dogs pictured are Mark and Matmu who are just beautiful, laid back dogs. They were great with all the attention they received from people and other dogs.

The CARE Center made up this fantastic board in addition to a few others signs they had promoting spay/neuter and facts about puppy mills.

Josie is available for adoption through Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus.

The Champaign County Humane Society also had a booth at the Market. Unfortunately, I did not get pictures of their table.

Overall, the weather was great and everyone was able to talk to lots of people about helping animals in the community.

Illini football season is almost here and Annie is looking for a tailgating partner. She and Josie are still very patiently waiting for homes. Annie was spayed at the U of I last week and did really well after her surgery.

And of course, we have a bunch of amazing cats and kittens at Petsmart. We'll be in the adoption center until the end of the month.

Beautiful Mai

Meet beautiful Miss Mai. She is part siamese but thinks she is 100% a Siamese Princess. She has very beautiful medium long fur that is an exotic mix of white and brown. This little lady is going to be a dominate female but gets along well with other cats. Currently she is a wonderful mix of kitten; she likes get rowdy and play with other cats, yet is sure to tell you when she is ready for some love and petting like only a Siamese can. Come out to petsmart in August to visit the cute little Miss Mai, she will steal your heart with her cute little Siamese Princess Prance.

Dusty the injured kitty

Poor Dusty... he was found severely injured last night and underwent emergency surgery to repair severe trauma from perhaps a fall. He was found outside a business, unable to move. He is in serious condition. Thanks to Dr. McElroy and Dr. Dust at VCA Heritage Animal Hospital, Dusty may just get a second chance.

I received some more beautiful pictures from Roscoe's mom over the weekend. I imagine in the first picture that he's posing on a couch for a modern home design magazine.

He's settled in with his two cat siblings and is an enjoying life. While I miss him, I'm so happy that he got a great home.

If you've had a chance to check out our Petfinder listings lately, we have LOTS of kittens. We'll have several at Petsmart when we return in August, but if you are currently looking for a kitten, you can always meet and adopt them out of foster care.

Meet Roscoe (buff) and Becki (orange). They are around 8-10 weeks old. Roscoe is the quieter of the bunch and likes belly rubs, having his fur brushed and purrs as soon as he's picked up. Becki on the other hand is a spitfire - all 1.5 lbs of her! She is curious, energetic and ready to take on the world.

You can meet these two next Sunday along with GiGi at Petsmart between 1 - 3pm.

One of our fantastic long-time volunteers made us these amazing cat bookmarks to sell and raise money for our program. She made an entire bag full and we'll have them for sale at the Market (that is, if our volunteers don't all buy them first!)

As a side note, I took this adorable picture of Bear and Fiona keeping each other company. They are such good friends and all-around great cats. They've been waiting very patiently for the perfect family to adopt them. They've been in the program since January. That's a long time to wait for a home. That's ok, they know it'll be worth the wait.

Special Intake: Josie and Annie

Meet Josie and Annie. We received a call this week from a high-kill shelter outside of Champaign that has lots of dogs on the euthanasia list. Several animal rescues from Chicago and the surrounding areas stepped up to take these special dogs. We're at capacity now with kittens and special needs cats, but sometimes you just have to make room for one or two more.

These girls are fantastic. They are loving the attention of being in a home environment and spent the better part of the morning rolling around in the grass. They appear to be house broken and do well walking on a leash.

Josie is a the larger (40 lbs) brown mix and Annie is the beagle. They are both around 1 year old.

They're having their checkup tomorrow and if they get a clean bill of health, we'll have them at the Farmer's Market on Saturday.

Meet our summer sweetie, Gigi. This poor little gal was found as a stray exceedingly thin. She now has a round little tummy and loves to eat. She absolutely loves other cats and people. She is about 10 weeks old. She loves to play with toys and sleeps with her mouse. Let's hope she can find a loving home.

Rural King - Rantoul

CATsNAP was at the Rantoul Rural King on Saturday for an adoption event. We brought a few of our adoptable kittens and the store provided free flea dipping for community dogs. While we didn't have any adoption interest, we were able to talk to lots of people about our program and pass out an entire stack of spay / neuter flyers.

The staff was very friendly and accommodating with us and had a table set up for us when we arrived.
Who can resist this face? Little Calvin was quite the charmer on Saturday. We had to wrap blankets on the front his crate as he kept trying to wiggle his way to freedom.
We have lots of kittens in the program right now. Kitten season is in full swing and our foster moms (and dads!) are working hard to keep these babies happy and healthy. They are all doing an amazing job for these little ones.

CATsNAP rescued Lila from a trailer park at the end of February. This beautiful girl is all kitten! She likes to spend her days climbing on everything she can get her paws on, chasing other cats and playing with toys. She LOVES other cats, but is very shy around new people. Once she warms up to you, she's just perfect. She meets her foster mom at the door whenever she comes home, likes to snuggle on the couch and bite toes at 7 in the morning. Lila is FIV+ and would do best with another FIV+ cat or two for her to play with. However, she currently lives with 2 FIV- cats with no problem. Lila is an indoor only cat and is fed a high quality diet.

FIV+ status is not a death sentence for cats; they can lead long, wonderful and healthy lives just like any other cat. FIV is not transmitted to other cats by close contact, but typically through serious bite wounds. There is some more information online on at pet education and cat health.

I also found the following facts from the Best Friends' website -

FIV Facts
1. The Feline Immuno-deficiency Virus is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years.
2. FIV is a cat-only disease and cannot be spread to humans or other non-felines.
3. FIV cats most often live long, healthy, and relatively normal lives with no symptoms at all.
4. FIV is not easily passed between cats. It cannot be spread casually - like in litter boxes, water and food bowls, or when snuggling and playing. It is rarely spread from a mother to her kittens.
5. The virus can be spread through blood transfusions, badly infected gums, or serious, penetrating bite wounds. (Bite wounds of this kind are extremely rare, except in free-roaming, unneutered tomcats.)
6. A neutered cat, in a home, is extremely unlikely to infect other cats, if properly introduced.
7. Many vets are not educated about FIV since the virus was only discovered 15 years ago.
8. FIV-positive cats should be kept as healthy as possible. Keep them indoors and free from stress, feed them a high-quality diet, keep and treat any secondary problems as soon as they arise.

CATsNAP has just over a week left to show cats at the adoption center at Petsmart. The month started off a bit slow, but luckily, we had several adoptions by the middle of the month. This weekend Vinny, Bessie and Charcoal all went to their forever homes. Right now we have -

We brought in 3 small, gray female kittens yesterday from Paxton. They are adorable and are sharing a cage with Ebby.

Bear and Fiona went to foster care this morning for few days to relax and stretch out their toes. They should be back at the store by the end of this week.

I really hope we can place some of these cats by the end of the month. A few of them have been in the program for quite a while and are ready (and very patiently waiting) for a permanent home.

Campustown Kittens

I wanted to introduce you to two more adorable kittens that will be available for adoption in a few weeks. They are both 7 weeks and were found living underneath an apartment building on campus (correction: they were trapped in a backyard by the Parkland College area. We've been trapping lots of kittens lately and I can't keep them straight). Here's what their foster mom has to say about these great kittens -

The two little ones at my house are Jeremy (black) and Finnegan (gray and white). Both are sweet and wonderful! Polly is taking good care of them. Jeremy's hobbies include playing hide and seek and stalking plastic drinking straws (they make a satisfying crunch when caught). Finnegan likes nothing more than cuddling on someone's tummy. He also is a big fan of feathered teaser toys and wet kitten food.

Holy Cuteness!!!!

This has to be the cutest kitten ever! Meet 5-week old Shiloh. Born in mid-May, she was abandoned by her mother at about 4 weeks of age. She is currently in foster care and loves dogs, kids, and well, everyone! She will be spayed and ready to go in mid-July.

We had a lot going on at CATsNAP this weekend in addition to several adoptions including Frisky, TT and Puffball. We also have an adoption pending for Charlie. I'm really hoping the adoptions continue strong through the rest of the month.

Two of our young volunteers, Wesley and Bridgette had their very own garage sale to raise money for us. They worked really hard on the first 'Kids for Kats event! They spent most of Friday night setting up and all day Saturday working the sale and helping Ms. Kitty attract customers to the sale. They raised $150 for cats! Wait to go, Bridgette and Wesley!

We also had a great time at the Urbana Farmer's Market. Both veterans and a brand new volunteer helped at the table.

A nice couple stopped in and donated a litter box, treats, beds and cleaning supplies to us. We are always in need of items like that for the cats. A woman also came to the table a wrote a very generous check of $25o to CATsNAP.

I can't even begin to say how much the kittens appreciate (and need) monetary and supply donations. Between the two events, we raised about $400. For a small rescue group, this money goes a long way. $400 will-

Spay / neuter 11 feral cats
Keep our resident diabetic, Berber with insulin and needles for almost a year
Provider litter for all of our foster moms for 4 months
Buy us enough lime dip to insure cats stay ringworm free over a year
Feed over two dozen kittens with canned food for a month

Every bit helps. Every dollar adds up and helps homeless animals in our community who rely on us to keep them safe and warm.

Farmer's Market

We still have a great group of kitties at Petsmart right now through the end of the month. Just arrived is Charlie, a two-year old, front declawed boy. Can't believe how we skipped Spring and its mild temps and jumped into Summer with its energy-draining humidity. It seems as if kitten season is well on its way. Props to our wonderful volunteers who spend their time and energy trying to trap those innocent souls. And props to the volunteers who foster these cuties until they are either well enough or old enough to go to their forever homes.

Unfortunately, kittens get adopted quickly leaving cats that are a little older and senior kitties to languish in shelters and rescues. So my post today is to highlight some of these cats that have been up for adoption for quite a while, who have not found their forever home where they will be loved.

So please, take a look at some of these that have been with us for some time. Don't forget, kitten cuteness lasts only so long and then they are adults.

Memorial Day Weekend

Over the past three and half years of cat trapping, I have found that feral cats frequent many different types of places. Among the most popular in my area are dumpsters and the many sheds that surround my house. Saturday morning I did my usual looking out the window to see if any cats or kittens were peeking their heads out from under one of the three sheds around the perimeter of my house. It was around 8am that I spotted the three kittens playing on the side of my neighbor's shed. The rest of the weekend was dedicated to trapping all four of these cats. I took note of when the cats came out from under the shed (periodically from 5-8am, 3:30pm, and 8pm), I kept the food fresh and extra stinky, and I sometimes kept the trap forced open when I could not watch it so the kittens might get used to going in and out of the trap. One night, I even persuaded my husband to put off mowing since the noise would prolong the kittens from coming out from under the shed. By Tuesday at 7pm all three of the kittens were in the care of foster homes and the mom cat had already been spayed and returned to the shed. It was quite a busy weekend but very rewarding to know one less feral cat would have more litters and three kittens would not only survive but soon be adopted and spoiled as all kittens deserve to be.

Belly Rubs Anyone?

Meet Vin or Vinnie as his foster mom calls him, he is just a down right sweet cat who would fit into any home. He has tons of love to give to anyone who will let him. He gets along well with other cats and would probably do ok with a calm dog. He is kid friendly but will be timid with loud noises and fast movements.

What he really wants is to be loved and played with. He loves to lie on the floor and have his belly, back and chin rubbed for as long as he can keep your attention. He is not quite sure if he is a lap cat yet but with a permanent home he will probably discover how great laps are.

Vin is a very sleek, long, all black cat who chirps at things that interest him or when he wants your attention. He is not a meower, but lets out a curious little chirp to let you know he is there. He is very neat in the litter box and just wants a family to call his own.

Nose Kisses Forever

This is Bessie, she is a very sweet cat who had a terrible start to life - she was left in an apartment with her kittens when the owners moved out.

Bessie is 2 years old and ready for her permanent home. Bessie would do best as the only pet in the home but could do ok with a docile male cat. She is really playful and can entertain herself with milk rings,string toys and balls. She is very loveable and will sit on your lap and purr and let you scratch her head for a long time.

She is really curious and likes to give nose kisses when you are petting her. Here is a picture of her giving her foster mom a kiss while she is getting some attention. Bessie is a very healthy cat who just wants a family to love her.

A Job Well Done

Thanks to everyone who helped with the garage sale today! The morning started off wet and dreary, but we picked up business after about 10am and stayed busy until around 1:30. In total, we raised over $550 for our new food and litter program. The money we raised today will keep our ferals and foster cats well fed all summer long. Several people stopped by to donate canned food and a few people just came to donate money... thank you.

One of our volunteers tirelessly and cheerfully stood on the corner of Springfield and Prospect for most of the day dressed as Hello Kitty and brought in traffic.

I've always said CATsNAP has the best volunteers in town - everyone was at the garage sale bright and early and worked the entire day to raise money for homeless cats.

The sale was such a huge success, we may have another in August to continue to build on the new food program. I'll keep everyone posted when we decide on a date.

Just a reminder - we're having our 'food drive' garage sale THIS Saturday in Champaign! It will be at 1018 W. White (corner of White and McKinley) from 8 -1. All the money will go to our food and litter program. Our foster moms are in need of supplies, so we're hoping to raise enough funds to keep our cats fed through the summer.

We'll also be taking food donations at the sale. If you have any extra canned or dry food (any brand), please consider donating it.

We've had lots of people donate clothes, shoes and all sorts of household items.

Completely unrelated - I've had several people ask how Bear and Fiona are doing. These are two of the friendliest cats I've ever met. They are so loving, and want as much attention from people as they can get. They love other cats and will be a perfect fit into any home.

Westminster Fibers

For the last several months, CATsNAP volunteers have been busy at work on the 'knitting for kittens' project. We've had several people donate their time and skills to make beds for the cats that are in foster care and in the cages at Petsmart. Having warm, fluffy, homemade beds gives Petsmart a more inviting feel. Those cold, stainless steel cages get really depressing to look at and must be uncomfortable for the cats. I think it also lets potential parents who are visiting the center know that the animals are being taken care of when a volunteer isn't there.

Imagine my surprise when the UPS guy dropped off a HUGE box courtesy of Westminster Fiber. Westminster makes high quality yarns such as Rowan, Nashua and Shepherd.

Here's the first bag - They were all nicely wrapped and came in wonderful, vibrant colors-

The donation included lots of wonderful wool yarns. I'm thinking felted cat beds?

The ever-inquisitive Bear (who is still looking for a home) was the first to investigate.

I think he approves. There's about 80 skeins of yarn donated to us. This should keeps us busy for months. If anyone is interested in picking some up, let me know and I'll get it to you.

Weekend Events

Spring is in full swing, and we are busy as ever. We are back at the Urbana Farmer's Market and kicked off the weekend there! We had a small table set up near the main entrance with cat mint and crochet cat beds to sell that have been made for us by a wonderful woman in Mansfield, IL.

We had several people approach us needing information on how to get their cats fixed and a few people expressed interest in volunteering!

The weather was wonderful and the music was great.

Meanwhile, foster mom Sue and company held down the fort at the Petsmart Adoption Drive which continues through Sunday.
We had the dashing Boo who is just about as handsome as a cat can get. He's around 2 years old and is just a joy to be around.
Benji did really well at Petsmart. He's a special guy looking for a special family.
I can't forget Farley. He looks sad in this picture, but he's actually just really sleepy from his canned food. If you haven't met Farley yet, you must stop by Petsmart tomorrow between 1pm and 3pm. He is 4-paw declawed and his former 'owners' tossed him outside to fend for himself in the winter. He lost part of his ear and tail to frostbite. Gentle Farley doesn't hold any grudges, he's still willing to give people another chance as long as they promise to keep him warm and indoors and never throw him away.

Huge 'thank you' and kitten kisses to the generous person who donated 2 large bags of towels to us. They came just at the right time.

We'll be at Petsmart again next weekend Saturday 11am-2pm and Sunday 1pm-3pm. We have two litters of kittens in the program right now that will be ready to be adopted by May 15. If I can convince their foster moms to let me steal them for a few hours, we'll be showing kittens in addition our fantastic adoptable adults.

CATsNAP participated in the annual Petstravaganza event put together by the University of Illinois this afternoon. We were able to educate lots of kids about the importance of spaying and neutering their animals. There was a lot of interest from adults about volunteer and fostering opportunities. We also received a large amount of much needed donations in the form of canned and dry food as well as litter and other supplies.

Meet Bengie!

Meet Bengie. He is a beautiful, 2 year old tabby boy. Catsnap took in Bengie when he was a tiny kitten and was very sick. He still has some residual health issues from his life outside and is susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Bengie isn't contagious, he's just a bit wheezy and can get a bit sneezy when stressed out. Bengie's mom is moving out of the country in a few months, and because of his health issues, isn't able to go with her.

Bengie will need to be an indoor only cat, fed a high quality diet and daily lysine. He has been give the all clear for adoption by the awesome vets at VCA. Bengie currently lives with another cat, but would do fine as an only cat or with another low-key feline.

Adoption Update: Punkin and Peaches

We just got an update from the woman who adopted Punkin and Peaches from us last year. The girls look they are doing really well and love their new family-

My husband and I adopted princess (now punkin) and peaches last August from you guys and we just love them. they just had their first birthday and I thought you might like a couple of pictures of them. they are still the sweetest cats ever. Can you believe they are almost the perfect cats (other than peaches playing at 4am---nipping at our legs and feet under the covers!). We just love them. They are so spoiled---I just bought a new, bigger kitty condo for them. I can't wait to see them play on it.

Doodle, Cody and Friends

It's hard to believe that little Doodle is going to be a year old soon. She is all grown up now, but still as pretty as always. She's so big now, but I still picture her as the little 1.5 lb kitten that loved everybody she met.

Their mom says she and Cody are still doing great and loving life. They're doing wonderful with their kitty siblings and have the happy ending every cat deserves.

Alpha Phi Omega

We've been very fortunate to have had Alpha Phi Omega National Service Co-Ed Fraternity help us out with fundraising. They have just finished a 'Canning for Catsnap' event on campus and helped raise over $160 in just a few days! The money will go towards our spay and neuter program and will help to reduce the number of homeless kittens born this spring.

April is here and the CATsNAP cats are back in the Petsmart adoption center!

We also have several events taking place this month. We'll be at the U of I Vet School Open House this Saturday from 9-2 and Petstravaganza Saturday, April 25 from 9-2.

Just as a heads up, we'll be at the Urbana Farmer's Market beginning in May (about 1-2 times a month all summer) and we will be having a 'food drive' garage sale May 16 and May 23 in Champaign. If you are interested in helping out in either the garage sale or the farmer's market, let me know, I've got a list going.

We're getting ready for the busy kitten season ahead. Hopefully, we'll have lots of wonderful adoptions that follow!

This is one handsome, hunk of a cat! Meet Cole - he also goes by Too Cool For School and Most Perfect Cat Ever. He's just been in the Catsnap program for a couple of days, but is already proving to be quite the heartbreaker.

Cole is laid back yet chatty, playful yet cuddly. All this wrapped up a beautiful tuxedo. What else could you ask for?

He is healthy and would fit well into any home. Come meet him this Saturday 11-2 and Sunday 1-3 at Petsmart.

Knitting for Kittens!

We've had several people donate yarn over the last few months, and we have wonderful volunteers crocheting / knitting blankets for the kitties to use while they are in foster care and in the cages at Petsmart. They really seem to enjoy them. I thought I'd share a picture of little Lila enjoying one of the blankets that was made for her.

Spring is here, which means summer is right around the corner! If you are planning any spring cleaning this year, think of us for any extra household items you no longer need. We will be having a 'food drive' garage sale sometime in this summer (Update: the tentative date is now May 16!) and we can use items to sell.

Adoption Update: Max

Catsnap received a very nice email from a woman who adopted a kitten from us in January. Max (then Carter) came to us from the Rantoul Pound with his two fluffy brothers, Fargo and Flint.

Max is doing great. He's very playful and sweet. He tolerates being carried around everywhere by my 4 year old and always leaves his claws in (except for at 5:00 am when he wakes us every morning, scratching on the bed!) He's getting along great and loves to play with his best buddy, Princess (seen in the picture with him).
Blue, our other cat adopted from Catsnap does not like Max AT ALL. She likes to hiss, growl and swat and him. But it doesn't faze him much. Blue does not tolerate the two very well but she gets by. She's just a bit grumpy and anti-social.
Well, I just wanted you to see how cute Max still is and know that he's doing great. Blue's doing great too. She just doesn't understand why these kittens just won't leave her alone!

Meet Spicy!

The wild beast has been tamed. She is now more sweet than spicy. What a real sweet heart she is. She loves to come up and flop as well as rub up against you. Her favorite things to do is to chase and play with my permanent foster Linus as well as to sit and stare and to talk to you. Rook

Meet adorable Rook! This guy didn't stick around long enough to make an 'adoptable' posting for him - he was only in the Catsnap program for about a week! Rook was another one of our special cats - he lost one of his back legs as a kitten when he was hit by a car. Lucky for him, he was able to get quick medical attention and made a wonderful recovery.

Rook was adopted a few days ago by a great family who also adopted Nika, a 4-month old Russian Blue kitten. They should have a great life ahead of them.

This Weekend: FIV+ kittens

We'll have an extra special group of kitties at Petsmart this weekend.

We have Lila (on the right, 6 weeks), and 5 month old siblings Bear (left) and Fiona (dilute tortie). They are all wonderful cats and ready to go to their forever homes! They are all FIV+, but should lead happy and healthy lives.

Bear and Fiona are pretty bonded and we'd like to send them home together. Little Lila will fit in anywhere.

Adoption Update

I thought I'd share with everyone that lovely Ian went to his fur-ever home last weekend! He has a wonderful new family and a new name, Roscoe. His new mom says he is is adjusting well and is very chatty and playful! Roscoe has cat siblings to keep him busy. He is such a great cat - such a happy ending!

The month of February is almost over! Catsnap will be leaving Petsmart at the end of the month. We still have a great bunch of kitties there looking for homes-
Bessie - She's super sweet and would do well as an only cat.
Bear and Fiona - They just arrived this week. They are about 5 months old and we would like to adopt them out together as they are FIV+.
Moose and Jermaine - Our extra large (in heart and size) boys. They can be adopted together or separately. They are both healthy, social boys but are FIV+.
CJ and Lenny - These are wonderful boys. They are a little scared at first, but are great cats once they warm up to you.
Ian and Mouse - Wonderful Ian has been adopted and will be going to his forever home on Saturday. He is with Mouse (just arrived last night) who is about 4 months old and solid grey. She would fit in perfectly to any home.

A big 'thank you!' to everyone who helped sell Community Day packets at Bergner's this last Saturday. Everyone had a good time, including the cats who all showed well. We were able to talk to lots of people about our program, and meet several people who have recently adopted cats from us.

We had the pink stroller at the event, and I wheeled Miss Megan Marie around the store. She is a beauty. Unfortunately, all of my stroller pictures came out blurry, but I did get a few others that came out well:

We had the fabulous Hello Kitty who is always a hit, posing with Megan Marie.
Beautiful Jermaine loved all the attention he received.
Of course, we had Ian. How is he still a Catsnap cat??? He's handsome, healthy, super friendly and and all around wonderful cat. I may be a bit partial, but I think he's just about perfect.

Moose is at Petsmart

Meet Moose. This cat is HUGE! His heart and personality are the only things that are bigger than he is. He loves to be around people, and head butts are his specialty.

He was picked up from a trailer park where he lived a rough life. He still has several cuts from his time outside, but they are healing nicely.

Unfortunately, Moose contracted FIV from his time outside. He would do best as an only cat or with another cat with his condition (luckily, Catsnap has a few FIV+ cats that would love to live with friendly Moose). Moose craves companionship, be it people or other cats.

He wanted to show everyone his nice, healthy choppers and long whiskers. How could anyone resist?

Moose is at Petsmart right now until the end of the month. This is a guy you must meet!

Marketplace Mall this Weekend!

Catsnap will be making an appearance at Bergner's on Saturday from 10am - noon. We'll be at the mall entrance selling Community Day packets and showing a few cats. For cats, we'll have Ian, Megan Marie and another adoptable cat or two. Hello Kitty will also be there!

The Bergner's Community Day Event is a great fundraiser for us. We'll be selling packets (which can be redeemed Saturday, February 28) for $5.00. Catsnap will get to keep the $5.00 and the purchaser receives a $10 coupon and (4) 20% off coupons good throughout the store. There's some more information and a preview of the coupon booklet here.

If you are interested in purchasing coupons but won't be at the mall on Saturday, I'll also have coupons with me at Petsmart this Friday from 5:30-7, or send me an email and I'll get them to you.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Petsmart Adopt-A-Thon! We adopted out several cats this weekend including Gina, Lilly, Luna, Catherine and Sweetie Pie! We have two new cats up at Petsmart: Cookie and Stewart. I'll post pictures as soon as I remember to bring my camera up there.

Catsnap will be at Petsmart on Saturday [*update* we'll also be there Sunday 11-5] from 11-5 for an Adopt-A-Thon! There will be several other animal rescue organizations showing their available dogs and cats, so it should be a great event!

Megan Marie

Wanted to introduce you to Megan Marie, my latest foster. If you are looking for an independent gal who is content to just sit by your side, overseeing things while you are working on the computer..then she's your gal.

Megan is classified as a Torbie. Torbie is short for tortoiseshell-tabby. When you add tabby stripes a tortie becomes a torbie. They are also called patched tabbies since they are a tabby with patches of red or cream. Megan Marie has a dot of orange on the top of her head, which I think is kind of cute.

She would be a wonderful cat for a couple that has no other cats or dogs that wants a low-maintenance friend for life. She's not one to be your shadow nor cover your lap with fur...she's just well...Megan Marie.

Say 'hello' to Lenny

Meet adorable little Lenny. He is currently with CJ at Petsmart. Lenny has a very similar personality to CJ. He was trapped outside, and is still very shy. He is very gentle and would love to live in a nice, quiet house with another cat or two. Lenny would do best with experienced cat parents who have the time and patience to work on his socialization.

He loves to be petted and purrs non-stop when he feels safe. If you looking to add a new cat into your home, consider this wonderful boy!

Lovey .... Therapy Cat? Another Happy Ending.

I wanted to share part of an e-mail regarding a former foster cat of mine (previously known as Sidney). His "dad" had to recently let his cat of 12 years go because of cancer. His heart is heavy with grief but because of Lovey...he is able to get through the day. Here's a portion of the e-mail:

"Lovey has been sleeping with Dad every night, which he never did before. He has always slept with me. Lovey kisses his hands & face & cuddles next to Dad’s chest with Dad’s arm around him all night!!! It’s like he knows Dad needs him. He has such a huge hole, but Lovey is very instrumental in reducing the grief. I know I said this before, but I am so glad Dad has Lovey to keep him company and divert his attention from dwelling on the loss."

Here's a picture of the two of them (this was taken prior to the loss), but you can see by the smile, how much he loves him.

Former Catsnap Cats

I love looking at the pictures of former Catsnap cats (and the occasional dog). They all come from tough backgrounds, were rescued and have their own very special story. Best of all, they all have happy endings. Here's a few from the past year or so-

Little Bailey came from under an apartment building in Campustown.

Meet Gibbs!

I can't believe that we still have kittens in January! It's so cold out there - It's just amazing that they are able to survive all the snow and ice we've had lately.

With that, meet lovely little Gibbs. He's about 14 weeks old. He was trapped outside and is getting used to people. He's still scared with his new surroundings. Since he is so small, he should come around quickly and be a wonderful, social cat for his new family. His foster mom has been spending lots of time working with him and she says he is a champion snuggler and purrer.

Gibbs loves toys, stuffed mice (not the real kind though!) and other cats and would need to go into a multi-cat home. Keep your eye out for him to make an appearance at Petsmart sometime during the month of February.
